Horseshoes are clanging against a stake behind the cedar trees. People are shouting. Oooh. Ahhh. A bonfire is blazing. We’re all drinking frozen margaritas, eating roasted clams and oysters. About an hour earlier, Boo, Nick, Viwy, and I split three tiny psilocybin mushrooms, just enough to feel good, nothing serious. We’re at that place where everything twinkles. My voice has never sounded so beautiful. I think it must be my mother singing for me. An angel. Nick’s hair is full of stars. My dress is the most beautiful blue the world has ever seen. It’s cobalt and midnight. It’s indigo and electric. The blue of old Blue Willow china. The blue of jars and bottles in windows. Of Morpho butterflies and indigo buntings. It’s scarlet blue. It’s the blue of my mother’s glass ink pot. It shimmers in the moonlight. It glimmers. It glows. It burns and dances, flame blue. When I move, my dress feels like a silk hand passing over my body. I love my dress. I cross my hands on my shoulders, touching my blue dress, and sing:

My parents cannot stand him, ‘cause he rides the rodeo

My father says that he will leave me cryin’
